I have a 2013 zx14r with around 20,000 miles on the clock. While on a longer ride with friends in the wilds of WV I ran low on fuel and while making my way to a station the bike did this random cut out. Almost like one hit the kill switch for a second. The check engine light lit and the bike returned to normal running. I associated the issue with low fuel. Once refueled I started the bike and no CEL. I ran the bike home and the random cut outs happened again over the next 100 miles. Kinda scary. Between cut outs the bike runs normal, has no loss of power, it always starts immediately, and really has no misses. Engine temperature and speed don't seem to have much effect, although the longer I ride the more frenquently the issue presents. I have never gone much more than 20 miles since the original incident because of my fear of tow trucks. The check engine light comes on with the first cut out, but disappears with every restart.
My first guess was the fuel pump or filter due to the conditions of the first presentation. I replaced the filter (really cruddy) the pump and the regulator. I jumped on the bike thinking problem solved - no joy!
Questions:
I cannot seem to call up the codes for the CEL. It appears that the ECU does not recognise some faults (per 3-32 of the shop manual). When I try to access the self-diagnosis mode per the manual all I ever get is the English / Francais menu. Am I doing something wrong here, or will the menu not appear without a check engine light (which goes out once the bike is turned off).
It now sounds electrical to me, but why the increased occurance with longer rides? If anyone here has experience with similar problems or some ideas where to begin looking, please chime in.
Thanks
